When you think of how you can make money if you have no money to start a business, consider child care. Our world is full of children who need care, so there will always been a need for people to work with them. But you must like kids, and be good with them, to endure in this field.
Finding the Right Child Care Situations
Some kinds of child care work do require some start-up money. For example, to take care of children in your home on an ongoing basis, you may need licenses, insurance, and bonding. There could be some expenses in making your home safe for toddlers and in acquiring play equipment. You might want to spend some money to advertise, beyond simple flyers and business cards.
But there are many ways to work with children that cost you nothing.
There is babysitting, that time-honored way for everyone from teenagers to grandmothers to earn some extra money. I know one woman in her sixties who works three mornings a week for a young mother, caring for two preschoolers in their home while the mother retreats to her office to write. This arrangement has been going on for over two years now, so the woman who does the babysitting is practically part of the family.
There are also jobs at nursery schools, day care centers, and public schools. These shouldn't be hard to find, as they would be advertised or you could phone and inquire.
How would you find babysitting jobs? Word of mouth is one of the best ways. Ask around. Tell people at any organizations you are part of. Put an attractive notice on a bulletin board. You could even offer to sit once for free, if you had the time. Some people would take advantage of this and never call you again but you could get some good regular customers this way. If you are willing to work any time of the week, this could be a plus as well. Consider caring for a child with special needs.
You Must Like Children and Be Good with Them
To be successful with child care, you must enjoy spending time with children. You must like them, and you must also have some skills at helping them when they are angry or upset. You should know basic first aid and you should be able to keep a cool head in any emergency that could arise. Consider these factors in deciding whether to earn money this way, because if this kind of work isn't your cup of tea, neither you nor the children will truly benefit. There are many other ways to earn money.
But if you do like children and need some extra income, give child care a try. The money isn't usually spectacular but the rewards of working with children can be.
Robert A. Robertson loves to advise people on ways that they can earn money. He finds that most people have more opportunities available to them than they realize. He works on a variety of website projects; one of his current ones is a business-to-business one about using paper shredding companies to handle document shredding, which must be done to a high level to be in compliance with government privacy regulations.
