I saw an interesting question online recently... "Can you make money from surveys?" It would be nice, wouldn't it? You spend five minutes doing a survey and earn $5. That's a very handsome $60 per hour... fantastic money for sitting at your computer checking boxes when you get a spare half-hour. So, can it be done?

Well, let's look at it objectively. Demographical information, as collected by surveys is valuable marketing information. If a company can find out what brand of soap people prefer and why, they can make sure that their next soap product will be well received. Lots of money is being spent to collect that kind of information. Therefore, money may well be available to participants. You give up your data and time in exchange for a few dollars per survey. It sounds like it could work.

But, if you're getting paid to take the survey, you would immediately fall into a specific demographic of people who have signed up to take surveys in order to earn cash. While some marketers would want to poll that demographic, most won't. They'll want to poll their customers, their resellers, their target markets. Perhaps polling people who have signed up in order to earn money will bias their data.

Then there's all the possible scams, schemes and cons that relate to the "get paid to take a survey" market. There are a lot of companies who promise you "rewards" for taking surveys... rewards that turn out to be "points" which you need to accumulate to exchange for "prizes" that you may not even want. Even legitimate surveys may take a long time to complete. If one takes 30 minutes and earns you $3, is it worth it?

By the way, be very careful to read the small-print when you sign up to take surveys. Otherwise you may well find that your name/email address will be sold to many more companies. It may be wise to get a free email address and use that when you sign up, just to be safe.

Finally, there's the outright scam of asking you to pay to join and then not supplying any surveys, or not paying you for completed surveys. I wouldn't recommend you paid to join for any reason. If you're valuable to the company sending out surveys, they should pay you to join... at the very least it should be free to join.

It's possible there are quality companies who pay cash for people to take surveys... after all, as I said at the beginning, your information is potentially valuable to marketing companies... but you will need to be very careful about the company you select. And please, don't believe the hype that taking surveys is an easy way to make money... if it was, everyone would be doing it.

Of course, the bible doesn't really say that. It says, "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil." (1 Timothy 6:10). While this article is not intended to be a review of what religion says about making money, I have put a couple of quotes in it for those who follow the Bible or some other religious text. You can find similar quotes in almost any religious text. What this article is intended to do is to dispel these money making myths.

Love of money is evil and it can destroy marriages, ruin families, and make your life miserable. If your life becomes nothing but a focus on getting wealthy to the point you are replacing the love of people with the love of money, then money is evil. People are the ONLY good reason to have money. Not for what possessions you can buy with it.

Money in itself is just a thing, another possession. It's what you do with it, or how you treat it that determines whether it's good or bad. You must learn to be content with whatever amount of money you now have, but that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't work on building wealth.

In general, money will only make you more of what you already are. It's an amplifier. If you're a giving and caring person, more money will allow you to amplify your giving and caring. If you're currently greedy or selfish, having more money will just make you more greedy and selfish. If you now frivolously spend every dime you make, even if you somehow manage to become wealthy you won't keep your wealth.

If you follow the Bible, Luke 16:10 says it like this: "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."

That's why it's so important to get your life in order before you become wealthy. You need to work on your financial mental programming before you work on financial gain. Your mind needs to be trained to think like wealthy people think so you'll act like wealthy people act.

You also need to learn how to share what you have with those who are in need. "For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more and running over. Whatever measure you use to give--large or small--will be used to measure what is given back to you." (Luke 6:38) That's the Bible's way of saying that if you use wealth wisely, more wealth will be provided to you. If money were evil, that wouldn't be the case would it?

But even before you work on training your mind for wealth, you have to believe that making large amounts of money can be a good thing or you won't do what's required to make it.

If you are one those who are not convinced that having wealth is a good thing, ask yourself how you would feel if a family member, maybe a parent or your child, became severely ill. Would you want to see them get the best medical care available regardless of the expense? Wouldn't you feel helpless if you didn't have the money to help them get the best medical attention?

Or what if you have aging parents who need financial assistance. So many people these days are retiring without a sufficient nest egg built up and they are forced to live in poverty on a meager income from some government assistance program. Would you want to see your parents live this way?

Or what if you had a friend or family member who was in a financial predicament? Wouldn't you feel good if you could help him or her out? Or have you ever wished you had the financial resources to help out a total stranger you've seen on the news whose house burned down and their kids needed clothes and other essential items?

Or maybe you would like to provide meals for the needy, or help less fortunate kids, or fund the development of an addition to your church.

The charitable uses for money are endless. But only those who have money can use it to benefit others. While the poor can give small amounts to charitable causes, it's wealthy people who have the greatest impact on the world.

But don't forget yourself in this picture. Even if you're happy now, you can't predict what will happen in the future to change that. Your current source of income isn't guaranteed. You could get laid off (it's happened to me several times), or you could be injured and no longer be able to work.

By taking time to focus on making money now, you're essentially taking out an insurance policy in case something happens to you later in life.

Large amounts of money take time to make. It's difficult to build wealth when you really need it. So by choosing to pursue financial wealth now, you're insuring yourself against future unknowns.

While charity or or insurance against unknowns are choices you can use wealth for, you'll also have more choices in every area of your life.

Would you be doing the work you're now doing if you were wealthy? Or would you be doing what you're passionate about. Incidentally, doing what you love to do is one of the best ways to become wealthy in the first place.

But besides picking the career of your choice, you'll be able to provide your children with the best educational opportunities, take your parents on that vacation around the world that you always dreamed of, spend more time with out of town family or friends, seize opportunities that will advance you and your families' lives, and the list goes on and on.

So even though you may be living a comfortable existence now and not feel like you really need to strive to build financial wealth, wouldn't you really rather live the life of your dreams instead? Are You Really Making Money?

A new breed of consignment store is emerging.

Many traditional children's consignment stores sell the ideal: Bring us your gently used clothing and make money to help offset the original cost for the merchandise. On the surface that sounds awesome, and that is why there are thousands of kid's consignment stores nationally competing for your used clothing, accessories and equipment.

The typical process works like this: Bag your items and take them to the store. The store will act as your agent to sell the items it accepts for a specified period, usually 90 days. If your item sells you are paid a percentage of the final sale price and/or a store credit.

If a store credit option is used at the store you work with, you as a consignor are at the mercy of items stocked in that store's inventory to use the credit for items you may in the future.

If your item does not sell, some stores will allow you to of pay a fee to get the merchandise back. Some do not offer an option for you to get your stuff back at all. At the end of the contract period, your items become property of the store owner as a payment of sorts for taking your old clothes.

This is not a good business deal for the original buyer of the clothing. In any other service line, if the agent fails to sell your item--it does not become property of the agent. You are doing these places a favor by giving them inventory to keep shops open and people interested in shopping with them.

Factors out of your control can and do influence buyer behavior. Perhaps you took a costly holiday item a bit too close to the season for buyers and it sits unsold. The store accepted your item with a soft promise to sell. It can become inventory for that store owner next year and sold at a nice price--with you as original owner recouping no money.

Many stores offer to donate your items to charity if they do not sell. This is true in many cases, but only after the product prices are dropped and inventory is placed on dollar or discount racks, recycled for a new season, or otherwise put through several scenarios for recouping money for the store owner, not for you.

In short, if you do use a traditional method for consignment do homework and really understand the process you are signing up for.

If this is not a path for you, there are emerging online children's consignment stores that recognize the need for a new business model. Consignment businesses should work as an agent for you. It is in the best interest of both parties to sell merchandise at the best possible price and at a maximum convenience to you.

Look for businesses that are flexible to the way you work and live. Several online consignment vendors offer free shipping of your used items to them. This is an easy choice as UPS can and will come to your house to pick your package up. In this model there are no set consignment days and hours for you to juggle around. There is no need for you to take the time, nor incur the expense of your gas to drop inventory off at the store.

Be aware of what happens to your clothing once the consignment period is over. If the agent can not sell--you should have a mechanism in place to get your stuff back. You paid for it. Worst case is you will get it back and sell it on Craigslist, or donate it and take the tax write off for yourself, or a myriad of other options that benefit you.
